Save our horses

I am writing this on a piece I saw on 10 TV out of Columbus on
Sugarcreek Livestock Auction and their sale of horses for meat.

Animal rights groups press Congress to halt the slaughter of horses

By Dave Montgomery
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - Animal rights groups mounted a final effort Tuesday to push
through a ban on U.S. horse slaughterhouses in the closing days of
Congress, displaying graphic videos and wielding a letter of support
from more than a fourth of the Senate's 100 members.

The legislation, which would shut down three processing plants in Texas
and Illinois, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 263-146
in mid-October after a high-profile campaign that included celebrities
such as country music star Willie Nelson and actress Bo Derek.

Act to protect horses from slaughter as food
In the United States we don't breed and raise our horses for human consumption .They are not food animals, and most Americans are against horse slaughter.
It shouldn't be too difficult to limit the numbers of horses born each year. Just don't leave a stallion with the mares, and geld the boys not used for breeding.
Once a horse is on her way to the slaughterhouse, she can be kept in corrals with stallions. No one cares if she is in foal when she gets to the slaughterhouse, so the foals are killed, too.

URGENT ALERT! DECEMBER 5 SPECIAL NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY IN SUPPORT OF
S. 1915

LAST CHANCE TO END HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THE US!

As you surely already know, S. 1915 –the sister bill of HR 503- is
waiting to be considered on the Senate floor.

While our bill awaits to be called for a vote, it has been reported
that pro-slaughter pressure on legislators has greatly increased in
an attempt to wane our ranks of supporters in the Senate and defeat
the bill, which can be fatal due to the tight Senate schedule, making
it vital to counter this pro-slaughter build-up with a flood of calls
and faxes in support of the bill and urging Senators to bring it up
for a vote as demanded by a vast majority of the American people.

Letter: Help stop the slaughter of horses
Friday, December 1, 2006

To the editor:

Horses are not raised as livestock in America. They are companions, pets, athletes, recreation and therapeutic partners. America's horses are used in police work, search and rescue, National Park and forestry services etc.. Yet, approximately 90,000 horses per year are sent to foreign owned slaughterhouses located in the U.S. Their meat shipped to countries like France, Belgium and Japan for human consumption, even though many routine medications for horses (such as wormers) are labeled "do not use in horses intended for food."

Love For Horses Prompting Rescue Effort

Brooke Greenleaf
Brooke Greenleaf
Two, out of 125,000. What's the percentage - hardly enough to measure. But enough, for Brooke Greenleaf - for now, at least.
Greenleaf, who with her husband, Jim, owns a house and five acres of land in Boothbay, hopes by next summer there will be two rescued horses grazing peacefully on their land, instead of winding up in a slaughterhouse.

Congress should ban slaughter of horses for human consumption
MICHIANA POINT OF VIEW

HAZEL H. STEVENS

I must take issue with letters applauding U.S. Rep. Chris Chocola's vote
against the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR 503). This bill
passed overwhelmingly (263-146) in a bi-partisan effort to prevent the
misery and animal slaughter of nearly 100,000 horses in the United States for human consumption abroad.

Senator Bingaman voted against last year's Ag amendment. In all liklihood,
he will vote against this bill too. He has no idea whether or not S 1915/HR 503
will get a vote.

Keep in mind that this is exactly what Goodlatte and company said about our
chances for a vote in House!

It is vital that we keep contacting our senators and also please contact
Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist urging him to take immediate action on HR
503! Please remind Senator Frist that each day the passage of this bill is
delayed, horses continue to suffer horrrible cruelties both during transport to
slaughter and throughout the slaughter process itself. Let him know that
millions of Americans as well as the overwhelming majority of Congress demand swift
passage of this bill!

Senator Frist's contact information is as follows:

Fax: 202-228-1264

US horsemeat violates EU laws and US export regulations

Here are the FACTS. With no "food animal" regulations applied to horses in the US, the three foreign-owned horse slaughterhouses are in violation of US FDA regulations -

Look at Sec. 381. Imports and exports,(e) Exports, specifically:

Laws on wild horses

The Ledger Dispatch recently printed a letter that I found shocking and
ignorant. The letter was attacking Nora Coryell on her views about what
is in fact happening to wild mustangs and stated that she had no
foundation for what she was saying. The letter practically went as far
as to call her (and liberal Web sites) a liar.

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to read Ms. Coryell's
letter. However, it would be a pleasure to enlighten the writer, and
others in the community, with some information.

MOUNTAIN VIEWS: BILL TO END SLAUGHTER OF AMERICAN HORSES HAS A FEW HURDLES
TO JUMP

By John Hanchette

OLEAN -- With the dramatic capture and extensive news coverage of longtime
regional fugitive Ralph "Bucky" Phillips on Friday, those readers among you
who've been following the horse slaughter controversy on these pages may
have missed a big development.

Just before the weekend, the House of Representatives voted to ban the
slaughter of horses for human consumption. If the American Horse Slaughter
Prevention Act gets through the unpredictable Senate, and President George
Bush signs it into law, it would probably shut down the three foreign-owned
and much-criticized horse abattoirs in the United States -- two in Texas and
one in Illinois. More than 90,000 U.S. horses annually -- from pets to plugs
to racers to draft to show stock to cow-chasers -- were killed in the trio
of plants in recent years.

House approves bill to shutter horsemeat industry
By Todd J. Gillman

The Dallas Morning News

(MCT)

WASHINGTON - Horse lovers won a huge victory Thursday when the House voted overwhelmingly to shut down the horsemeat industry.

Farm and ranch groups oppose the ban, arguing that slaughterhouses in Kaufman and Fort Worth, Texas, and DeKalb, Ill., provide a valuable service by processing 90,000 unwanted, though mostly healthy, animals each year.

"What we are exposing today is a brutal, shadowy, predatory shameful practice that borders on the perverse," said Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., an author of the bill. "It reflects on our culture. It reflects on our priorities."

The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote Sept. 7 on a bill that would end horse slaughter for human consumption. With the vote drawing near, those on both sides of the issue have been trying to garner last-minute support.

A rally was held Sept. 5 by supporters of the bill, while the American Veterinary Medicine Association, Horse Welfare Coalition, and others who oppose the bill have issued an advertisement in Roll Call - a newspaper that covers the actions of Congress - asking lawmakers to defeat the bill.

the hearing to be moved after opening remarks.

The original room was standing room only and could not accommodate all

Texas oilman kicks up dust over horse slaughter
SUZANNE GAMBOA
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Texas oil tycoon Boone Pickens is galloping into a
congressional fight to end the slaughter of horses for consumption overseas.

Pickens, founder of BP Capital and Mesa Petroleum, issued a news release
Friday saying he was launching an attack against "foreign-owned horse
killing plants."

He called horse slaughter "America's dirty little secret."

Two of the nation's three horse slaughter plants are in Texas and one is
in Illinois. Most of the meat from the slaughtered horses is shipped
overseas where it is sold as a delicacy.

"The brutal slaughter of horses for consumption by wealthy diners in
Europe and Japan cuts against our moral and cultural fiber - it's just
plain un-American," Pickens said in the news release.

American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act to Receive Hearing
Please Call Supporters Now

July 19, 2006
Dear Friends,
H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA), is finally on
the docket to be reviewed by the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on
Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection. A hearing on the bill will held at
2 p.m. on July 25, 2006.
The AHSPA is the only measure that will permanently put an end to the
slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and international
transport of live horses or horseflesh for the same purpose. Just last year, over
90,000 horses were slaughtered in the three foreign-owned horse slaughter
facilities located in Texas and Illinois. Members of Congress must demonstrate
their continued support NOW.

Dear Friends,

Congressmen Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) is pulling out all the stops in an attempt
to derail HR 503 as he had previously done in the last Congress. However, we
are assured that HR 503 will be considered.

Mr. Goodlatte is using every avenue he can find to try to amend the bill
and/or delay the vote. Our sponsors are fighting back and assure us that we will
not be denied the vote.
