If you live in: NM (Domenici), UT (Bennett), NH (Gregg), CO (Allard), MD, (Mikulski), VT (Leahy), CA (Feinstein), WI (Kohl)

We need you to contact them NOW, and here is why/what:

These senators will be in the conference that takes place between House/Senate Appropriations, Interior Subcommittee. They iron out the differences between the bills each house voted on. Now, we need the above senators to push in conference, for keeping the Rahall amendment in so no wild horses can be sold in 2006. No such language went through the senate.

Can you call or fax (no time for mailed letters) and urge them to push for keeping that language IN the conference report/final language? That's what we need. We need many dozens of letters/calls NOW. Ask for a definitive reply quickly. You dont have to live in those states, but people who do have more clout so to speak. Start now, and dont stop until we say it's safe. Cross post.

Hello Friends of Wild Horses and Burros,

Several weeks ago we asked you to contact your Representatives in the US House, to urge them to support the Rahall-Whitfield Interior Appropriations Amendment. You spoke out in massive numbers and we won that vote by a landslide!

Unfortunately, the amendment was not introduced in the Senate version of the Interior Appropriations bill.

There is still a chance however to hold onto the victory that we achieved in the House. The House and Senate will be meeting in Conference to hash out the differences between their bills and draft a final, unified version. We need you to contact Members of the Senate that are on the Conference Committee and ask them to “keep the Rahall Whitfield amendment in the final version of the Interior Appropriations bill”.

Here is the list of Senators on the Conference Committee.

As a follow up to yesterday’s alert, it has been brought to our attention that Senators Burns, Stevens, Cochran and Reid should not be contacted on the Amendment, as they are firmly opposed to it and will not change their minds. It is preferable we focus our efforts on the others:

I looked at the new transportation law which I have heard goes into
effect in October, this year right? Looks like they are placing some
pretty stringent requirements on the truckers. Some truckers could
face fines up to $10,000. Seems to me, that no one is going to want
to do this should they be subject to these kind of fines. They are
not allowed to transport horses unable to get on the ramp without
assistance (that also means whipping, dragging, prodding), horses
unable to bear weight on all four legs, blind horses, and generally
horses that are not fit for travel. Looks like every trucker is
subject to this. I was reading in the report that one of the
slaughter houses in TX said they might have to shut down because of
the extra costs of transporting the horses in a single load versus a
double load. Aaaah. What a shame.

TCEQ: plant is operating properly
By Jeanie Allen Davis
Interim city manager Curtis Snow said the real issue regarding Dallas Crown
Packing is the difference between what Texas Commission on Environmental
Quality saw when it inspected the plant and what neighbors say they are
experiencing.

Snow said Friday that when TCEQ inspector Cynthia Beauchamp viewed the
facility last week her reaction was that Dallas Crown is well-managed and in
compliance.
City council and staff met last week to discuss a citizen petition against
Dallas Crown Packing presented by Robert Eldridge during citizens' comments at
last month's council meeting.

Federal Officials Echoed Grazing-Rule Warnings
a.. The Fish and Wildlife Service and the EPA shared the land bureau experts' worries.

By Julie Cart, Times Staff Writer

Federal wildlife managers across the West warned the U.S. Bureau of Land Management that new livestock grazing regulations were potentially harmful to wildlife and water quality, adding their voices to those of BLM scientists who said similar criticism was excised by Washington policymakers.

Wildlife experts for the Fish and Wildlife Service's three Western regions, along with Environmental Protection Agency officials, expressed concerns in written comments to the BLM last year. The bureau solicited the comments as it was finalizing the new grazing rules, which go into effect this month.

Mind boggling. ^.^

Private cattle outnumber wild horses and burros at least 100 to 1 on public lands.

These numbers are recent (if not the latest) Bureau of Land Management numbers, as well as numbers obtained through independent investigation. Please understand that population levels in particular are fluid and subject to a significant degree of uncertainty (the same caveat applies to numbers provided by the BLM).

In 1900s, more than 2 million wild horses roamed the West.

Today, less than 30,000 wild horses likely remain on public lands.

Over 4 million head of private cattle enjoy subsidized grazing on public lands.

More than 200,000 wild horses and burros have been removed from public lands since 1971. The BLM plans to remove another 9,800 by fall 2005.

The 1971 Act mandates that wild horses and burros be managed on 47 million acres of public lands on 303 herd areas.

Since 1971, wild horses have been zeroed out from 102 herd areas representing over 12.5 million acres.
