Since the fall of 2004, when the Burns rider put thousands of America’s wild horses at risk of slaughter, we have counted on your voice to help us speak out against the senseless slaughter of wild horses. Last year, we achieved a huge victory in the passage of a budget amendment that would have prevented the slaughter of wild and domestic horses for one fiscal year, only to have the USDA override Congressional intent and the express will of the American people.
After this devastating announcement from the USDA, we knew that the only way to remove the immediate threat of slaughter was to gain passage of full legislation that would permanently close the doors on horse slaughter in the US. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, originally introduced in 2001, is a full and permanent ban on horse slaughter for both wild and domestic horses. Until now, proponents of horse slaughter have succeeded in denying this legislation opportunity for a vote. We are pleased to inform you that the time has finally come for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR 503, S 1915) to be voted on by the US House of Representatives!
Sometime in the next few days, the House will vote on HR 503 – the House version of the bill. This is our best shot folks. It may literally be our only window of opportunity to put a permanent end to the slaughter of horses for human consumption on this country. We must raise our voices now, and send a resounding message to our Representatives that American do not eat their horses and that we support a permanent end to this barbaric industry. Please call your Representative in Congress today and ask everyone you know to make a call. We may never get this chance again. It has taken 5 years to secure a vote on this bill. Please do not let the horses down. We are their only voice!
America’s wild horses are a living symbol of our nation and our culture. Our history was written on their backs, and yet they are rapidly disappearing from America’s vast western landscape. We must remove the immediate threat of slaughter so that we can begin to focus on longterm solutions that will protect their freedom and their habitats for generations to come. Please call today!
Contact your Rep today by calling the Capitol Switchboard and providing your zip code: (202) 224-3121
Ask him or her to support HR 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
After calling, take a moment and send an email or fax. You can find and email your rep online through www.house.gov.
If you would like to say more, you can remind him or her that:
Americans regard their horses as pets and companions, and we do not eat horses in this country.
Horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia.
America’s wild horses are also being slaughtered. These living symbols of our nation deserve our protection and we should not allow them to end up as a gourmet meal for diners in Europe and Asia (which is where horse meat is exported to).
The 3 Horse Slaughter plants in this country are all foreign owned. Americans do not benefit economically from the slaughter of our horses. On the contrary, live horses contribute greatly to our economy – through hay and grain consumption alone they boost our agricultural industry.
PLEASE TAKE SWIFT ACTION ON BEHALF OF THE HORSES!!!
