Laws on wild horses

The Ledger Dispatch recently printed a letter that I found shocking and
ignorant. The letter was attacking Nora Coryell on her views about what
is in fact happening to wild mustangs and stated that she had no
foundation for what she was saying. The letter practically went as far
as to call her (and liberal Web sites) a liar.

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to read Ms. Coryell's
letter. However, it would be a pleasure to enlighten the writer, and
others in the community, with some information.

US horsemeat violates EU laws and US export regulations

Here are the FACTS. With no "food animal" regulations applied to horses in the US, the three foreign-owned horse slaughterhouses are in violation of US FDA regulations -

150 people lose their jobs if all three slaughterhouses shut down? Ah well! I wonder how many of the immigrants are actually legal. Hm.

Slaughtered Domestically: 94,037

Exported to Canada for slaugher: 21,369

Exported to Mexico for slaughter: 7,821

Exported to Japan for slaughter: 1,992

Total Equines Slaughtered from US sources: 125,149

This is an increase of 23% over the 2004 total of 101,949

Thus far for 2006 there has been an overall increase of approximately
12% which means the total for 2006 will be around 142,000
