By JIM GETZ / The Dallas Morning News
Texas’ two horse-slaughtering plants have scored a legal victory with a federal judge’s ruling that district attorneys cannot try to shut them down under a 1949 state law.
U.S. District Judge Terry Means ruled Thursday that the law had been essentially repealed by subsequent state laws and, even if it had not been, federal laws pre-empted the state statute.

Foreign Companies Pay to Influence U.S. Policy
More than $620 million spent lobbying federal government
By Julia DiLaura
WASHINGTON, May 20, 2005 — The army of lobbyists working behind the
scenes to affect federal legislation and agency regulations now
count some 650 foreign companies among their clients, which are
seeking to influence everything from America's defense contracting
and pharmaceutical policies to the sort of environmental matters
that literally affect U.S. soil, according to an analysis by the
Center for Public Integrity.
For example, from 1998 to mid-2004, London-based BP plc spent $33
million lobbying the U.S. government—the third-highest amount among
foreign entities. Surprisingly, this international energy giant
lobbied nearly as much on matters related to the environment and
Superfund as it did on oil and gas issues. One likely explanation:
BP and its U.S. affiliates are listed as the potentially responsible
parties for 162 Superfund pollution sites that, collectively, have
cost the Environmental Protection Agency $1.1 billion in analysis
and clean-up costs. All told, records reveal, 22 foreign companies
listed as potentially responsible parties for 275 Superfund sites in
40 U.S. states reported lobbying on the same issue or directly to
the EPA.

Let's not forget about..
Sep. 1st, 2005 11:53 pmDear friends,
We are working on putting together a semi load shipment of hay/feed from our
suppliers in IL to be delivered to the animal victims of Katrina.
We are putting the plea out tomorrow on the Hanks Place radio show to all
the Hanks posee members (truckers) to find someone with an available semi to
haul the load down to MS and LA.
We are going to need help with the cost of fuel, so if you can help out in
any way, please paypal to my account at _www.paypal.com_
(http://www.paypal.com/) account is my email address _glv190@aol.com_ (mailto:glv190@aol.com)
Any little bit will help!
If you are in IL and want to contribute items for the horses, we could use
extra halters, lead ropes, vetwrap, bandage material, wound ointments, eye
ointments, fly spray, veterinary pharmaceuticals, and of course feed and hay!
Please call or email me for details on donating items for this effort.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Please continue praying that no more human or animal life will be lost in
the aftermath of this horrible disaster.

EQUINE RESCUE GROUP HELPING LOUISIANA’S HORSES
Habitat for Horses/Lone Star Equine Rescue is organizing a massive relief
and rescue effort to help the equines of southern Louisiana after the
devastation of Hurricane Katrina forced millions to evacuate. A large number
of horses, mules and donkeys are now in danger of starvation, injury and
death if relief efforts are not immediately taken. FEMA and the USDA are now
in control of the areas most devastated by the hurricane. As quickly as they
allow, our emergency relief efforts will start.
Volunteers from Texas and Oklahoma will gather at a central staging area and
proceed to the designated sites in Louisiana. From that point, trained
rescue volunteers will proceed to any location where horses have been
spotted and attempt to extricate and transport them to safety, where they
will receive medical care from the Louisiana State Veterinarian Office. All
efforts will be made to contact the owners. If contact cannot be made, the
animals will be transported to another location for recovery.
