Jacksons, Barbaro to be honored at Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Fallen Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro will be honored May 5 at the site of his greatest victory.

Churchill Downs is planning a tribute to Barbaro and owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson between the sixth and seventh races just before the Derby.

Barbaro's death transcends sports

Barbaro's death is not for the sports pages. It goes on page one and also Editorial. People who haven't been to a horse race in their lives feel undone by the loss.

Animals get hurt being what they are.

Horses run on stilts for legs. If horses didn't run on ideal conditions on a race track, they would try to split the wind on a lumpy field on the other side of nowhere.

Barbaro's medical condition is 'potentially serious' again

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- Barbaro's condition turned "potentially serious" again Wednesday, a day after the Kentucky Derby winner's veterinarian gave a more upbeat report, saying the colt was stable and resting comfortably.

Dean Richardson, the chief surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, also said the colt faced "tough odds" and that doctors were looking at all possible treatments to keep the 3-year-old comfortable.
